What to Bring to a Mexican Restaurant

Your BYOB Mexican Guide

Mexican food is a diverse and delicious cuisine, and there are many different wines and beers that can pair well with it.  Below are a few of the best wines to pair with Thai food. After you select what you want to bring, check out our list of BYOB Mexican restaurants in Chicago!

White Wines

In general, white wines tend to work well with Mexican food. A Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, dry wine that has bright acidity that can cut through the richness of Mexican food. Riesling is an aromatic wine with a subtle sweetness that can balance out the spice in the food. Viognier is a full-bodied white wine with fruity flavors that meld wonderfully with grilled meats and seafood.

Red Wines

In general, you want to pick bolder reds to stand up to the strong flavors of Mexican cuisine. Grenache is a medium-bodied red wine with fruity notes that can pair well with tomato-based dishes. Malbec is a voluptuous red wine that can handle spicy food. Zinfandel is a full-bodied red that will go great with meats and mole.

Spirits

If the restaurant allows it, a nice sipping Reposado Tequila can be very nice. Some restaurants will make margaritas for you, in which case a Blanco Tequila is your friend!

Beer

Pale Ales are hoppy with a slight bitterness that can cut through the richness of Mexican food. Wheat Beers are light and refreshing with a hint of sweetness to balance out the spice in the food. Lagers are crisp with a light flavor that will pair well with any type of Mexican food.
